This is a study in my on-going efforts to improve my understanding of clouds and the craft of watercolor painting. I found that taking the time to understand the macro structure of the clouds and the relationship of these cloud sets to one-another helped improve the confidence of my brush strokes. I also moved in layers; defining the larger structures and moving within them to build up the intensity of the colors and bring out the details. While I worked from a photo, I only referenced it for the basic form of the clouds and to define the color palette. This really felt like a sketch in watercolor which translated into a more relaxed image. I feel like this was a breakthrough painting for me and that I can use what I’ve learned here in my future efforts!
